Drop-Back Stance Shallow Swings

Pull your trail foot a foot back from the target line and hit shots from that closed stance.

Duration
10 min
Reps
20 balls
Equipment
none
Level
Intermediate

How to do it

  1. Take your normal setup, then slide your trail foot about a foot straight back from the target line.

  2. Keep your shoulders roughly square to the target.

  3. Swing at half speed and feel how much room the club has to drop behind you.

  4. Build up to 75% effort once the ball is starting right and curving back.

  5. Hit 20 balls, then hit 5 from a normal stance keeping the same feel.

Goal

Use the stance itself to make a steep, out-and-over start down physically awkward to produce.

Feel cue

Feel the club dropping in behind you with plenty of room, so you have to swing out toward the right.

Mistake to avoid

Swinging harder to compensate for the odd stance — start at half speed and let the new shape appear before you add any effort.
