Exhale-Then-Swing Routine

Breathe out fully before every shot and start the club back only once the breath is finished.

Level

How to do it

  1. Stand behind the ball and pick your target.

  2. Take one slow breath in, then breathe all the way out.

  3. Walk in and set up while the breath is still going out.

  4. Start the club back only once your lungs are empty and your hands feel soft.

  5. Use this on every shot for a full practice session.

Goal

Take the edge off the tension that makes the change of direction snatchy, especially under pressure.

Feel cue

Feel your shoulders and hands go soft and heavy as the breath leaves you.

Mistake to avoid

Doing this only on the range and abandoning it on the first tee — the nerves you are trying to manage only show up on the course, so it has to become part of the routine.
