How to do it

  1. Lay an alignment stick on the ground pointing at your target, just outside the ball.

  2. Set up with a mirror or phone behind you on the target line.

  3. Swing slowly to the top and freeze.

  4. Compare the direction the shaft points to the stick on the ground.

  5. If it points right of the stick, lower your trail elbow and rebuild the top, then repeat for 8 checks.

Goal

Replace guesswork about shaft direction at the top with a reference you can actually see.

Feel cue

Feel the club sitting quiet and level at the top rather than tipping over behind you.

Mistake to avoid

Fixing the shaft direction with a last-second wrist twist at the top instead of changing where the trail elbow goes — a wrist-only fix leaves the elbow high and the problem comes back at speed.
