Split-Grip Width Backswing

Slide your trail hand several inches down the shaft and make backswings, using the gap to stop your arms folding in.

Duration
6 min
Reps
3 sets of 10
Equipment

Level
Intermediate

How to do it

  1. Take your normal lead-hand grip, then slide your trail hand about four inches down the shaft.

  2. Set up as usual with that split grip.

  3. Make slow backswings to the top, keeping the gap between your hands exactly the same.

  4. Check at the top that both arms are still extended and the hands are away from your head.

  5. Do 3 sets of 10, then make a few normal swings straight after each set.

Goal

Use the split hands as a physical brace that makes a narrow, collapsed top position impossible to reach.

Feel cue

Feel both arms staying long and braced apart, like you are holding a steering wheel at arm's length.

Mistake to avoid

Letting your hands slide back together during the swing — the whole drill depends on the gap staying the same size from address to the top.
