How to do it
Take your normal address position with a mid iron.
Make a fist with your trail hand and hold it between the end of the grip and your lead thigh.
If the gap is much bigger than a fist, step closer to the ball.
If your fist will not fit, step back slightly.
Rebuild the setup 15 times, checking the gap every time.
Goal
Give the golfer a fixed, portable measure of how far the hands should be from the body.
Feel cue
Feel your hands sitting close enough that your upper arms lightly touch your chest.
Mistake to avoid
Dropping your hands straight down to close the gap while your feet stay too far from the ball — move your whole body closer instead, or you will just have to reach again during the swing.
